The Moo Man
The award-winning documentary that took our little Sussex farm to cinemas around the world.
In 2013, a quiet documentary about a Sussex dairy farmer and his cows charmed audiences far beyond the milk round. The Moo Man followed a year in the life of Longleys Farm — and the remarkable bond between farmer Steve Hook and his herd.
A year on the farm
Shot over four years and distilled into a single, tender film, The Moo Man is the story of a traditional farmer swimming against the tide of industrial dairy. At its heart is the relationship between Steve and his cows — animals with names and characters, treated as individuals rather than units of production.
It’s funny, moving and utterly unsentimental about farm life. And it struck a chord: the film premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in 2013 and went on to screen at festivals and cinemas internationally.
A film about a man and his cows that somehow became a film about all of us.
Why it mattered to us
The film captured exactly why we do things the way we do — the welfare, the patience, the belief that milk should come from contented cows on real pasture. It introduced thousands of people to the idea of raw milk and to a gentler way of farming.
